Postpartum hair loss is very common in women

Postpartum hair loss is not uncommon and the great news is that it is not permanent.  You normally shed between 50-150 hairs a day.  When you are pregnant you have increased hormone levels which induce greater than normal hair growth.  Once your baby is born it will appear you have postpartum hair loss when you shed excess hair growth that occurred during pregnancy.

Postpartum hair loss occurs when you hormone levels return to normal.  Shedding can happen for up to 3 months after your child’s birth. It appears significant during these 2 to 3 months because the old hairs shed all at once.  Shedding will vary from person to person as some women will not significantly more hair loss than others.

Postpartum hair loss stops when your hair begins a new growth cycle.  Most women’s hair returns to the same state as it was prior to becoming pregnant.  If thinning or baldness is in your family, hair loss after your baby is born may be ever more noticeable.  If it continues after 3 months, your best bet is to contact you doctor to see if there are other issue you need to address.
